About The Role As a Staff Software Engineer on the Digital Credit Application (DCA) team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the architecture and stability of our mission-critical platform. This remote position requires residing within 30 miles of one of the specified locations: Portland, ME; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; San Francisco Bay Area, CA; or Seattle, WA. You will serve as a technical leader, overseeing backend services and complex transaction flows that are essential for credit adjudication processes. Your expertise will guide the team in transitioning towards a more flexible microservice architecture, addressing current platform limitations, and resolving operational challenges. You will collaborate closely with product managers, engineering teams, and external partners to design scalable, secure, and high-performance systems. Your hands-on approach will involve setting technical standards, mentoring junior engineers, and tackling large-scale, complex problems that directly influence our core business operations across North America Mobility, Over-the-Road, and Customer Payment Solutions sectors. Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in software design and development at scale
  • Deep expertise in Java and the Spring ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring Data)
  • Proven experience designing and operating distributed systems and microservices architectures in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Extensive experience with high-volume data modeling, transactional integrity, and database technologies (relational: PostgreSQL; NoSQL: Cassandra, MongoDB)
  • Strong practical knowledge of event-driven architectures and messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
  • Experience working with Service Mesh technologies such as Istio for traffic management, security, and resiliency
  • Deep understanding of Test-Driven Development (TDD), regression testing strategies, and engineering quality standards
  • Proficiency with CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Jaeger)
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, architecture, and implementation of highly available and resilient microservices using Java and Spring ecosystem
  • Drive technical roadmaps, project planning, and architectural decisions ensuring a balance between rapid delivery and long-term stability
  • Ensure system performance, observability, security, and scalability meet high standards under high load conditions
  • Establish and advocate engineering best practices, including code quality, testing, and code review processes
  • Collaborate with product management and front-end teams to design effective APIs (REST/gRPC)
  • Provide strategic guidance and technical mentorship to engineering teams across projects
  • Advise senior leadership on complex technical trade-offs and lead cross-organizational technical initiatives
  • Identify and resolve complex, cross-functional technical problems to improve platform robustness
  • Stay current with industry trends and incorporate innovative solutions to enhance platform capabilities
