Title: Engineering Manager, Security Platform

Time: Full time

Location: Remote within the United States, working in your local US time zone, with minimal travel for occasional offsites.

Compensation: $190,000 to $250,000 base salary plus competitive equity.

The Company

Our client builds software and hardware for national security and government users. Its products support operational missions across intelligence, maritime vigilance and information environments. The company focuses on delivering technology that government teams can use in demanding real world settings.

Role Overview

Become the first Engineering Manager dedicated to a newly separated Security Platform team, reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager of Data and Security. You will own the direction and development of the existing authentication, authorization and access management foundation across the company’s products. The immediate priority is to make it scale consistently across products and customers.

This is a player-coach position with approximately 30% of the week spent on technical work, including code review, architecture and system design. You will start with one direct report, develop the team’s direction and hire additional engineers as the function grows. The position combines production identity expertise with genuine people management responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own strategy and execution for the existing centralized authentication service, making its dependencies more modular and interchangeable across products and customer environments.
  • Design a consistent approach to identity, authorization and access management as the product portfolio and customer base expand.
  • Lead architecture discussions and code reviews, staying close enough to implementation to make informed technical decisions.
  • Manage and mentor engineers through regular feedback, development planning and clear expectations for delivery.
  • Build the team from its initial one direct report, identifying hiring needs and recruiting engineers as priorities develop.
  • Report to the Senior Engineering Manager of Data and Security, agreeing priorities and coordinating delivery with the wider engineering organisation.
  • Balance shared platform capabilities with the needs of the engineering teams and customers that depend on them.

Qualifications

  • Approximately 7 to 12 years in software engineering, including at least three years managing engineers with direct reports.
  • Experience personally building or leading production authentication, authorization or access control systems.
  • Current technical involvement through code review, architecture and system design; willingness to spend approximately 30% of the week on this work.
  • A completed degree.
  • Based in the United States and able to work in US time zones.
  • US person status, defined in the role requirements as US citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee, without visa sponsorship.

Additional Experience

  • Leadership of a security, identity or authentication platform used by other engineering teams.
  • Experience growing a small engineering team from approximately two to five people toward ten.
  • OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, SCIM, RBAC or ABAC, and policy engines.
  • AWS GovCloud or authentication within AWS GovCloud environments.
  • An active security clearance is useful but is not required for this role.
