Engineering Manager

Base $225k - $325k + Equity

Their platform automates complex workflows for major financial institutions with strong enterprise traction and a rapidly growing customer base. AI-first architecture from the ground up - background agents, evals, and AI-assisted development are core parts of the engineering workflow, not bolt-ons.
They’re hiring an Engineering Manager to own the health, output, and trajectory of an engineering pod of 6-8 engineers. Hands-on leader who still codes 10-20% of the time, manages with care and directness, and partners closely with Product and Technical Leads in a complex, high-stakes domain. Responsibilities
- Manage a pod of 6-8 engineers - running 1:1s, continuous feedback, hiring, firing, PIPs, and career growth
- Own your pod's execution cadence - planning, retros, delivery health, and surfacing risk early
- Continue to code 10-20% of the time - shipping 1-2 PRs per week to stay close to the engineering experience
- Partner with Product Managers and Technical Leads on prioritisation, architecture decisions, and cross-functional alignment
- Onboard new engineers effectively and keep documentation and ownership boundaries sharp
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience as a software engineer or engineering manager
- Real people management experience - managing 5+ engineers including hiring, firing, PIPs, and performance reviews (not just tech lead)
- Actively coding in a current or recent EM role - ships production software
- Strong TypeScript experience - no language substitutes
- AI-forward mindset - uses AI tools in engineering workflows and expects the team to do the same; familiarity with evals, experiment design, and dataset curation
- Backend engineering depth a strong plus
