Backend Java DeveloperLocation: Remote (with occasional travel to Cambridge, UK – approximately 2 days per month)

Salary: £50,000 – £60,000 per annum

About the Role

Our client is seeking a Backend Java Developer to join a key development team focused on enhancing intelligence analysis software used by public safety, defense, and commercial sectors across more than 130 countries. This is a remote-first opportunity within the UK with periodic on-site collaboration.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and maintain robust, reusable Java-based server-side applications.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including front-end developers and product managers, to deliver full-stack features.
• Write and optimize complex SQL queries and database schemas for high-performance data applications.
• Integrate search technologies such as Apache Solr to support advanced querying.
• Conduct both manual and automated testing to ensure software quality and reliability.
• Mentor junior developers and foster a collaborative development culture.
• Provide technical support in cooperation with Level 2 support teams.
• Stay abreast of evolving technologies to continually enhance product quality.

• Backend: Java REST APIs, Open Liberty, Apache Solr, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, DB2
• Frontend: JavaScript / TypeScript / React
• CI/CD: GitHub, CircleCI
• Cloud: AWS

Candidate Requirements

• Bachelor's degree (2:1 or above) in Computer Science, IT, or a related field.
• Significant experience in Java enterprise application development.
• Proven success in delivering backend systems into production environments.
• Advanced knowledge of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL Server, DB2).
• Strong SQL skills and experience in schema design and performance tuning.
• Familiarity with RESTful API development and integration.
• Experience with automated testing tools and agile methodologies.
