Senior Android Engineer
100% remote (Europe or South East Asia) · Long-term engagement, no end date
The End-Client
A fast-growing consumer brand with a large, highly engaged audience, building a subscription mobile app in the health and wellness space. The iOS app is live and the Android release is targeted for the next few months, with Android users already asking for it.
The app team is small and works closely across engineering, design and product.
About the Role
You’d join the Android build as a senior engineer. The lead developer is already building the app with AI doing most of the coding, and you’d work alongside them to extend that model. AI agents write most of the code (roughly 80/20), so the job is directing the agents, reviewing what they produce and owning the quality of the result.
A proof of concept of this approach, porting the existing native iOS app to Android, is already running. You’d take real ownership of the parts of the app you pick up and report to the Head of Product. It’s an individual contributor seat with a lot of autonomy: no layered org and nobody feeding you tickets. You’re given outcomes and expected to own them.
What You’ll Work On
- Porting the existing native iOS app to Android with AI-assisted development, together with the lead developer, and getting it to release
- Architecture and quality: you bring the architecture judgement, direct the AI agents building against it, and review and test what they produce
- The camera-based movement assessment on Android, integrating a shared on-device vision kit. The computer vision core is owned by someone else, so this is app-side integration, not CV research
- Subscriptions, analytics and attribution on Android (RevenueCat, Superwall, Mixpanel, AppsFlyer)
- AI-powered features in the app, built together with the backend team
- Everything around the code: tooling, SDK setup, Play Store configuration, privacy requirements and any research the work needs
What We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of Android development with Kotlin, including ownership of a production app’s architecture
- Strong architecture judgement: you understand how Android differs from iOS at a fundamental level, and can explain why an app is structured the way it is and what you’d change
- AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor or similar) are your main way of working, and you can show how you direct, review and test agent-written code
- Senior and high-agency: you work from outcomes, not fully written tickets
- Curious about AI-powered product features, and you’ve built something with them, at work or on your own
- Concrete answers with real examples from your own work, including the decisions you made and why
Nice to Have (Not Essential)
- Camera, computer vision or on-device ML on Android (CameraX, MediaPipe, LiteRT)
- Rust or native libraries on Android (JNI, UniFFI)
- Consumer subscription apps (RevenueCat, Google Play Billing)
- Some iOS or Swift knowledge, since the source app is native iOS
- Health, fitness or wellness apps, or a sports app background
Probably Not the Right Fit If
- You type most of your code by hand and see AI tools as an add-on
- You need detailed specifications before you can start
- You prefer to stay strictly inside Android and avoid setup, research or cross-platform work
Commitment & Contract
- Contract basis only: B2B, freelance, outside IR35 (UK) or independent contractor depending on your country
- Continuous, long-term engagement with no end date
- 100% remote, open to anyone based in Europe or Asia. Some overlap with Southeast Asia hours helps
