The IT Job Market: Slower Declines and New Opportunities Amidst Automation

IT Job Market Overview

The IT jobs market has faced a second consecutive year of shrinkage, according to a report by Janco Associates. However, the decline in 2024 has been significantly less severe than in 2023. Over the past two years, approximately 71,000 IT-specific roles have been eliminated, with 22,300 jobs lost in 2024 compared to 48,600 in 2023.

Impact of AI and Automation

M Victor Janulaitis, CEO of Janco, attributes much of last year's job losses to layoffs and the increasing influence of AI. Although layoffs have decreased in 2024, with 152,664 tech professionals losing their jobs compared to 264,220 in 2023, AI continues to reshape the workforce. Many traditional roles, such as data-entry operators and help desk staff, have been automated, leading to a demand for new positions like data architects, AI developers, and e-commerce specialists.

Demand for New Skills

Despite the overall job losses, there remains a strong demand for individuals skilled in AI and new technologies. Most of the hiring activity is occurring in small to mid-sized enterprises, rather than large tech companies that are focusing on automation.

Unemployment Trends

The tech unemployment rate has recently dropped to 2 percent, the lowest since November 2023, while the national unemployment rate stands at 4.1 percent. However, despite this positive trend, Janco warns that the IT job market may continue to contract in the upcoming months, as there are not enough new jobs being created to absorb the unemployed professionals.

Looking Ahead

Janco's insights suggest that enhancing one's skill set with AI competencies could be beneficial for job seekers. Alternatively, a career in cybersecurity is also recommended due to the high demand for qualified professionals in that field.
