Tech Jobs Surge: Unemployment Drops to Record Low of 2% as Hiring Increases!

Tech Unemployment Rate Hits 2%

The latest jobs data release indicates a significant increase in tech hiring, resulting in a drop in the tech unemployment rate to an impressive 2% in December, marking the lowest level since November 2023. Meanwhile, the national unemployment rate remains unchanged at 4.1%.

Growth in Tech Employment

In total, 7,000 new tech positions were added, contributing to a core tech workforce of nearly 6.5 million workers. However, the broader technology industry sector saw a decline of 6,117 jobs, primarily due to cuts in PC, semiconductor, and components manufacturing, reflecting a 1% decrease in the sector's employment numbers.

Active Job Postings

There were 434,415 active employer job postings for tech roles in December, including 165,189 new listings. Despite a decrease from November, sectors with the highest activity included software development, IT project management, cybersecurity, data science, and tech support.

Major Employers

Leading companies hiring in December included Amazon, Accenture, Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, GovCIO, Robert Half, Lumen Technologies, and Insight Global. Job openings were available across all experience levels, with 22% requiring 0-3 years of experience and 28% seeking candidates with 4-7 years.

Degree Requirements

Notably, 45% of December job postings did not require a four-year degree, with 85% of network support specialists and 72% of tech support specialists not needing a degree. This trend demonstrates a shift towards valuing skills and experience over formal education.
