A fresh wave of layoffs has hit the Bay Area, wiping out more than 600 jobs across various sectors, including tech, biotech, hotel, and retail industries.
Details of Job Cuts
According to official WARN notices filed with state labor officials in March, the following companies have announced significant layoffs:
- SK Hynix: 33 job cuts in San Jose, planned for May 19.
- AppLovin: 97 layoffs in Palo Alto, which occurred on March 21.
- Niantic: 68 staff cuts in San Francisco, scheduled for May 20.
- onsemi: 51 layoffs in San Jose, planned for May 11.
- Cruise: 34 staff cuts affecting workers in San Francisco and Sunnyvale, scheduled for late April and May.
- Cepheid: 113 job cuts affecting workers in Fremont, Newark, Sunnyvale, and Santa Clara, planned for May 12.
- Cargo Therapeutics: 84 layoffs in San Carlos, halting development and closing its site, planned for May 19.
- Sutro Biopharma: 65 staff cuts in San Carlos and South San Francisco, planned for August 1.
- JCPenney: Closing its San Bruno store and cutting 82 jobs, scheduled for May 17.
- Waterfront Hotel: Closed its doors in Oakland and eliminated 57 jobs on March 18.
In all instances, the employers indicated that these layoffs are permanent.
