For many IT professionals, manufacturing still evokes assembly lines and legacy tech. But the reality inside today's factories is far different. They're increasingly reliant on cloud platforms, AI, IIoT, robotics, digital twins, and cybersecurity — creating a surge in demand for IT talent.
According to Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute, U.S. manufacturers will need 3.8 million additional workers between 2024 and 2033, with roughly half at risk of going unfilled due to a skills gap.
Factories Need Tech Talent
“The factory floor is quietly turning into an IT department,” says Joseph George of GoTo. Smart manufacturing requires cloud infrastructure, data analytics, AI, IIoT networking, and cybersecurity — skills that enterprise IT pros already possess.
Sarah Lee from IDC notes, “Manufacturing is increasingly becoming a software- and data-driven industry.” Roles in AI, robotics, digital twins, and industrial analytics need expertise in cloud computing, AI, cybersecurity, data engineering, and systems integration — often without requiring traditional manufacturing experience.
Skills that Transfer
Network architecture, cloud, and data engineering skills translate directly. Cybersecurity offers a clear pathway, but requires learning how Operational Technology (OT) differs from IT. “IT prioritizes confidentiality; OT prioritizes uptime and safety,” George explains. Building OT-specific expertise through industrial cybersecurity courses is recommended.

Why Manufacturers Want IT Pros
Manufacturers are now hiring from outside the industry for tech roles. “The balance is shifting,” says George. Projects like predictive maintenance, OT security operations centers, and cloud-connected analytics need strong IT skills. “The people who combine both will command the real demand and compensation.”
Security a Central Skill
Louis Eichenbaum of ColorTokens emphasizes the convergence of IT and OT. “It's no longer enough to know how to secure an IT network. You must understand how a cyber event can affect physical operations.” Fast-growing roles include OT security architects, industrial cybersecurity engineers, and Zero Trust architects with manufacturing experience.
Making the Career Move
Experts recommend focusing on how technology supports industrial operations. “Get familiar with operational technology and industrial processes being digitally transformed,” George advises. Key roles in demand: OT security engineer, industrial data engineer, manufacturing cloud architect, and industrial cybersecurity analyst. AI skills will become critical as manufacturers scale predictive maintenance and AI-powered inspection.
Lee adds, “Professionals who can bridge IT and OT and understand how to deploy AI responsibly within operational environments will be well positioned.”
