Job Market Struggles: 1.7 Million Seek Employment for Over Six Months Amid Rising Unemployment

Job Seekers Face Tough Challenges
Job hunters are experiencing significant difficulties reentering the workforce. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, it now takes job seekers an average of six months to find employment, which is an increase of one month compared to previous years.
Rising Unemployment Rates
The number of unemployed individuals—those without a job yet actively searching—has also increased. As per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate rose from 3.7% in November 2023 to 4.2% in November 2024. The report released on December 6, 2024, highlighted that 7.1 million people are currently out of work, a significant rise from 6.3 million at the same time last year.
Long-Term Unemployment on the Rise
The statistics reveal a concerning trend regarding long-term unemployment. In November, 1.7 million individuals reported they had been seeking work for at least 27 weeks—nearly seven months—up from 1.2 million in the previous year. Additionally, continuing applications for unemployment benefits have reached record highs, indicating prolonged job searches. Bloomberg reported that these claims hit a three-year peak at 1.91 million for the week ending December 14.
Labor Market Cooling
Lydia Boussour, an EY senior economist, noted that "Labor market conditions are undeniably cooling." This sentiment is echoed by the challenges faced in sectors such as tech, law, and media, where hiring has decreased significantly post-pandemic. Job postings in these high-paying industries are dwindling, with only one job posting per unemployed worker compared to two job postings available in early 2022.
Increased Competition for Jobs
The competition is further intensified by a Gallup poll indicating that 51% of currently employed U.S. workers are seeking new job opportunities, the highest level since 2015. This surge in job seekers adds to the challenges faced by those who are unemployed.
