Grand Valley State University Launches New AI Degrees Amid 338% Job Posting Surge

GVSU Expands AI Education Offerings

In response to the dramatic increase in AI-related job postings, Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is introducing four new degree programs aimed at preparing students for a workforce that is increasingly reliant on artificial intelligence (AI). The GVSU Board of Trustees has approved the addition of bachelor’s and master’s degrees in artificial intelligence and software engineering.

Rising Demand for AI Skills

Since 2022, the number of job postings mentioning AI in the Greater Grand Rapids area has skyrocketed by 338%—from 78 unique postings in 2022 to 342 postings in 2024. Statewide, GVSU's market analysis revealed nearly 16,000 AI-related job postings from about 940 employers across Michigan.

Industry Collaboration

These new degree programs have been co-designed with input from over 160 industry partners, ensuring that the curriculum meets the needs of the job market. The College of Computing will expand its offerings to include training in machine learning, AI engineering, and AI ethics.

Bridging the Digital Skills Gap

A report from the National Skills Coalition indicates that while 92% of jobs require digital skills, one-third of U.S. workers lack the foundational skills needed. GVSU aims to bridge this gap by equipping students with advanced technological training alongside essential skills in critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Experiential Learning Opportunities

GVSU emphasizes experiential learning through internships and laboratory experiences, providing students with hands-on opportunities that enhance their employability. Dean Marouane Kessentini noted that industry partners are crucial in shaping the curriculum, ensuring relevance in a rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Commitment to the Tech Sector

The introduction of these programs aligns with GVSU’s Blue Dot Initiative, which seeks to grow the technology sector in West Michigan. GVSU President Philomena Mantella highlighted the university's dedication to technological training and partnership with local industries, projecting the creation of 20,000 regional tech jobs over the next decade.

In summary, GVSU's proactive approach in launching these AI degrees reflects a commitment to meet the burgeoning demand for AI skills in the job market, while also addressing the digital skills divide affecting a significant portion of the workforce.
