It's almost Halloween, and one of the spookiest ghosts you'll find is the ghost in the machine.
The phrase was coined by philosopher Gilbert Ryle in 1949 to mock the idea that a human mind (the "ghost") exists separately from the body (the "machine"). Today, it usually means something more literal, describing the mysterious, human-like quirks inside of technology, from uncanny AI to surprising algorithms to data that seems to take on a life of its own.
