The era of recursive self-improvement, where AI independently creates more advanced AI, is no longer science fiction. This shift is raising alarms that not just software engineers but also AI researchers themselves could face job displacement.
According to the IT industry, global tech giants are already leveraging AI in their own research. Anthropic revealed that Claude writes 80% of their code, while OpenAI is aggressively pursuing automation. Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s senior scientist, stated last year: "We aim for an AI with research capabilities equivalent to an AI research intern by September 2026 and a full-fledged AI researcher by March 2028."
At the recent International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML), studies showed that models like GPT-5.5, Anthropic’s Fable 5, and Zhipu AI’s GLM-5.2 successfully improved other AI models’ performance. Researchers predict: "By the end of this year, AI will approach human researcher levels in post-training."
The impact on jobs is already visible. According to CNBC, approximately 140,000 people lost their jobs in the U.S. tech industry this year. Even those from big tech companies are struggling to find reemployment, with a growing preference for stable jobs over higher salaries.
