About the Opportunity
Odeys Investment Limited is recruiting a talented Node.js Developer on behalf of a client operating in the financial-wellbeing technology space. Our client builds and runs a financial-wellbeing platform used by hundreds of thousands of employees across large UK public-sector organisations, helping people make more of the money they already earn.
Their products sit at the intersection of payroll, payments, savings and pensions — spanning earned-wage access (drawing down salary already earned), automated payday savings, pension salary-sacrifice arrangements, and AI-assisted financial coaching. It is a mission-led environment where the engineering you do has a direct, measurable impact on people’s financial resilience.
This is an opportunity to work on a high-scale, security-sensitive consumer platform, with modern engineering practices and a clear social purpose behind the technology.
The Role
As a Node.js Developer you will design, build and maintain the back-end services and APIs that power the platform’s financial products and the mobile and web experiences that sit on top of them. You will work within a collaborative engineering team, contributing to architecture decisions, writing clean and well-tested code, and helping to keep a sensitive financial system secure, reliable and performant at scale.
Key responsibilities
• Design, develop and maintain robust, scalable back-end services and APIs in Node.js (JavaScript / TypeScript).
• Build and integrate with third-party and internal systems — for example payroll, banking / payment rails, pensions and savings providers.
• Ensure the secure handling of sensitive personal and financial data, applying best-practice security and data-protection principles throughout.
• Write automated tests (unit and integration) and contribute to CI/CD pipelines to support frequent, safe releases.
• Optimise services for performance, reliability and scale on a platform serving a very large user base.
• Collaborate with product, design, QA and fellow engineers on requirements, technical design and code review.
• Help shape engineering standards, tooling and architecture as the platform grows.
Essential Skills & Experience
• Commercial Node.js experience — a strong track record building production back-end services and APIs.
• TypeScript — confident writing modern, typed JavaScript / TypeScript.
• API design — designing and consuming RESTful (and ideally GraphQL) APIs.
• Databases — working knowledge of relational (e.g. PostgreSQL / MySQL) and/or NoSQL databases, including data modelling.
• Cloud — hands-on experience deploying to a major cloud platform (AWS preferred).
• Engineering discipline — Git, code review, automated testing and CI/CD as part of everyday delivery.
• Secure coding — an understanding of secure development practices and handling sensitive data responsibly.
Desirable / Bonus
• Domain experience in FinTech, payments, payroll, pensions, open banking or earned-wage access.
• Regulated-environment exposure — familiarity with FCA-regulated or financial-services delivery, GDPR / data-protection obligations.
• Containerisation & orchestration — Docker and Kubernetes; event-driven / message-queue architectures.
• AI / LLM integration — building features that integrate AI assistants or large language models.
• Full-stack / mobile-adjacent — React or front-end exposure, or experience supporting mobile (iOS / Android) back ends.
• Cloud certifications (e.g. AWS) and experience with observability / monitoring tooling.
The Ideal Candidate
Beyond the technical fit, our client is looking for an engineer who is pragmatic, quality-minded and genuinely motivated by the platform’s social purpose:
• Takes ownership and delivers — comfortable working with autonomy in a fast-moving team.
• Communicates clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
• Cares about reliability, security and the end-user experience in a sensitive financial setting.
• Collaborative, open to feedback, and keen to raise the bar on engineering standards.
What’s on Offer
Commercial terms — to be confirmed
Salary / day rate, engagement type (permanent or contract), location and the remote / hybrid policy are pending the client’s formal brief and will be confirmed before candidate submission.
• The chance to work on a high-scale, purpose-driven FinTech platform that measurably improves people’s financial wellbeing.
• A modern engineering culture with strong practices around testing, automation and code quality.
• Meaningful, complex problems across payments, payroll, pensions and AI.
