Job Description

Posted on: April 1, 2026

Volunteer for a startup stopping the silent chronic disease epidemic in Africa! 🏥Chetacare delivers predictive chronic disease management to African patients through continuous monitoring between clinic visits, ensuring no patient falls through the cracks of the healthcare system.

Africa is facing a silent crisis: over 150 million adults live with hypertension, yet 93% remain at daily risk of stroke or heart failure due to inadequate control. Furthermore, 4 in 5 Africans with diabetes are completely undiagnosed. Structural barriers—including the high cost of medicine, a concentration of doctors in urban centers, and the lack of professional follow-up—mean that more than half of diagnosed patients stop taking life-saving treatment once they leave the clinic. Without continuous monitoring, manageable conditions often progress silently until they become fatal emergencies.

Chetacare fills this critical gap by providing a predictive management platform that manages everything that happens after a patient walks out of the clinic door. We reach users through three simultaneous channels—a mobile app, WhatsApp, and an IVR voice system for rural communities without internet—providing daily medication reminders, refill alerts, and symptom tracking regardless of a patient's digital literacy. Our predictive triage engine scores every patient daily, allowing stable patients to be monitored automatically while flagging at-risk individuals for immediate follow-up or referral to the nearest clinic before a crisis occurs. By building portable Electronic Health Records and conducting direct community screenings, Chetacare transforms a reactive health system into a proactive, continuous network that prevents emergencies and restores health for millions.

Role (Volunteer, unpaid): Lead Web DeveloperRole Description: Chetacare is a predictive chronic disease management platform built for Africa. We help patients living with conditions like hypertension and diabetes stay consistent with their medications, access clinician care remotely, and get triaged by real humans when it matters most. Our work sits at the intersection of digital health, community care, and technology built specifically for African realities. We've already reached 5,500+ people and intervened in 400+ emergency cases, and we're now building the platform to scale it. We'd love you to be part of it.

What You'll Do

  • Build and maintain the Chetacare website (chetacare.com) using modern web technologies
  • Integrate the WhatsApp Business API to power patient medication reminders and doctor consultations
  • Support the setup of an IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system for voice-based patient engagement in low-literacy communities
  • Contribute to the development of our mobile application (React Native or Flutter)
  • Collaborate with the founding team via Slack in a flexible, async-friendly workflow
  • Ensure the platform is optimised for low-bandwidth, mobile-first African markets

What We're Looking For

  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (React or Vue.js preferred)
  • Experience with REST API integrations (WhatsApp Business API or Twilio a strong plus)
  • Backend experience in Node.js or Python
  • Mobile development experience in React Native or Flutter
  • A leader who can manage their own time across a flexible weekly commitment

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Africa's Talking or similar African-focused communication APIs
  • Familiarity with IVR system design and setup
  • Interest in digital health or mHealth solutions
  • Experience building for low-bandwidth or offline-first environments

Why Join?

  • Portfolio-worthy experience building a real-world healthtech product from the ground up
  • Hands-on exposure to WhatsApp API, IVR systems, and mobile health technology
  • Networking with clinicians, health tech founders, and impact investors across Africa
  • LinkedIn recommendation and reference letter upon successful completion
  • The deep satisfaction of knowing your code is keeping chronic disease patients alive and on track

We would love to build the future of African chronic disease care with you.Time Commitment: Volunteer 7-9 hours per week for 3-5 months remotely đź’»If you want to make change happen, apply to volunteer with Chetacare now!
