About The Role We are seeking a highly experienced Full Stack Staff Engineer to join our Identity team at Stripe. In this strategic role, you will be responsible for shaping the technical direction of one of Stripe’s most critical product areas—identity verification and management. This position is not just about executing tasks; it involves providing technical judgment, influencing architecture, and transforming ambitious visions into reliable, scalable systems. You will own the design and development of core identity infrastructure, including the Identity Store, fraud detection pipelines, and verification platforms. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams such as machine learning, legal, product, and risk, you will ensure that our systems meet the highest standards of security, reliability, and scalability. Your work will directly impact millions of verifications each month, supporting Stripe’s mission to build the world’s most trusted store of verified identities and enabling safer, frictionless user experiences across our ecosystem. Qualifications
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years in strategic technical leadership roles
- Proven experience leading engineering teams on API design, frameworks, abstractions, or client libraries
- Strong track record of delivering pragmatic solutions that drive business growth
- Excellent ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and persuasively
- Autonomous with a high level of ownership and responsibility
- Proficiency in multiple programming languages such as Ruby, TypeScript, Python, Scala, Java, Go, and SQL
- Experience with distributed data stores, observability tools like Splunk and Prometheus, and modern infrastructure technologies
- Familiarity with identity verification, fraud detection, and trust & safety systems, especially at scale
- Experience working with ML systems in production, including model serving, training, and drift detection
- Prior experience in building platform products for diverse consumer bases, including internal and external developers
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and make confident decisions in a fast-paced environment
Responsibilities
- Define and own the technical strategy for core identity systems, including architecture, build-vs-buy decisions, and risk management
- Lead the development of new platforms such as the Identity Store, networked identity infrastructure, and advanced fraud detection pipelines
- Architect scalable, reliable, and secure systems that support millions of verifications monthly
- Drive cross-functional alignment with ML, product, legal, risk, and engineering teams to ensure cohesive development and deployment of identity solutions
- Set engineering standards and best practices across backend, ML, mobile, and front-end teams
- Mentor senior engineers, conduct design reviews, and promote technical excellence
- Ensure observability, alerting, and operational protocols are in place to proactively detect model drift, fraud patterns, and system failures
- Take ownership of system reliability, security, and performance, continuously seeking improvements and optimizations
