About The Role
We are seeking a Data Engineer II to join Splice's Data Engineering team. In this role, you will be instrumental in scaling the platform that supports creator payouts, revenue reporting, and product analytics across multiple product lines. Your work will ensure the reliability and consistency of our data infrastructure, providing a governed and trusted source of truth for various teams within the organization. As a mid-level, high-ownership engineer, you will manage features from technical design through implementation, monitoring, and documentation, while actively participating in our on-call rotation.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with data pipeline systems, including BigQuery, SQLMesh, Python, and Dagster. Your expertise will help modernize legacy pipelines, improve system observability, and optimize data processes to support Splice’s growth and innovation. Your contributions will directly impact critical functions such as finance, revenue reporting, product analytics, and data reliability, ensuring the platform remains scalable, efficient, and resilient.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of hands-on data engineering experience in a production environment
- Proficiency in SQL, including window functions, CTEs, query optimization, and execution plan analysis
- Strong Python skills for pipeline logic, data transformation, and testing
- Experience with modern transformation frameworks such as SQLMesh, dbt, or equivalent
- Experience working with cloud data warehouses, specifically BigQuery, including partitioning, clustering, and cost management
- Familiarity with workflow orchestrators like Dagster, Airflow, or Prefect
- Proven ability to build observable, reliable data systems with alerting, dashboards, and data quality checks
- Ability to own small-to-medium features from technical design through delivery with limited guidance
- Build and maintain data models in SQLMesh, including implementing incremental strategies, testing, and documentation
- Continuously improve and evolve data orchestration and transformation infrastructure to support platform scaling
- Modernize legacy pipeline jobs using Python and SQLMesh, reducing technical debt over time
- Participate in on-call rotation, triaging and resolving incidents such as ETL failures, data unavailability, and core metric issues
- Develop and maintain observability tools including alert thresholds, metrics, logs, dashboards, and escalation procedures
- Enhance system observability to detect failures early and facilitate rapid resolution
- Extend and maintain pipelines supporting creator payouts and GAAP-compliant revenue reporting
- Build support for new revenue streams as Splice launches new products and features
- Optimize query performance and reduce compute costs in BigQuery
- Contribute to ingestion platform improvements and product analytics infrastructure
- Ensure all work meets the definition of done, including validation, documentation, and monitoring
