About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Backend Developer to join our remote team. This role is pivotal in designing, building, and maintaining high-throughput platform services that serve as the backbone for multiple engineering teams. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in distributed systems, platform engineering, and scalable backend architecture. You will lead initiatives to develop shared infrastructure, optimize system performance, and enhance developer experience. This position offers an excellent opportunity to influence the technical direction of our platform, mentor engineering talent, and contribute to strategic projects that impact the organization at a large scale. The role is fully remote, allowing flexibility and collaboration across different regions within the United States. Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline
• Six or more years of professional experience in backend or platform engineering
• Proven track record of building and operating internal platforms or shared services used by multiple engineering teams
• Strong expertise in designing distributed systems with a focus on consistency, availability, latency, and failure handling
• Advanced proficiency in at least one major backend programming language such as Java, Go, Scala, Rust, or modern C++
• Deep understanding of high-throughput messaging, streaming, and event-driven architectures using technologies like Kafka, Pulsar, or NATS
• Comprehensive knowledge of data storage solutions across relational, key-value, document, and search workloads
• Experience leading multi-quarter platform initiatives, including stakeholder management and technical decision-making
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of producing clear technical documentation and presentations
• Ability to mentor engineers and influence engineering culture through code and design reviews

Responsibilities

• Design and develop internal platform services and shared infrastructure relied upon by hundreds of engineers daily, emphasizing developer experience and operational efficiency
• Architect high-throughput, low-latency backend platforms capable of handling large request volumes with predictable performance
• Create durable, replayable event-processing pipelines and asynchronous job execution platforms to accelerate feature delivery
• Design and manage caching, rate-limiting, and request shaping layers to ensure system stability and scalability under bursty workloads
• Develop platform abstractions, SDKs, and libraries that promote best practices and ease of use for product teams
• Establish observability, define Service Level Objectives (SLOs), and implement capacity planning to maintain high operational standards
• Lead multi-region, fault-tolerant, and geo-distributed system designs with a focus on availability, durability, and graceful degradation during failures
• Manage incident response, conduct blameless post-mortems, and implement engineering improvements to prevent recurring issues
• Set standards for API design, schema evolution, deployment practices, and backward compatibility across platform services
• Optimize platform performance through profiling, tuning, and algorithmic enhancements to improve throughput and reduce costs
• Collaborate with infrastructure, security, and SRE teams to ensure platform reliability, compliance, and security requirements are met
• Mentor mid-level engineers and lead architectural discussions to foster growth in distributed systems expertise across teams
• Produce comprehensive technical documentation, decision records, and operational runbooks for future maintainers
• Continuously evaluate emerging technologies, open-source projects, and architectural patterns for strategic adoption and innovation
