Data Engineer
Location: Fully Remote (UK)
Salary: £45,000 - £55,000 + Benefits
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time
We're working with a growing organisation looking to strengthen its data capability with the addition of a Data Engineer.
This is a hands-on role within a fast-paced data environment, where you'll be expected to contribute quickly and take ownership of your work. You'll work across a variety of data initiatives, developing and maintaining pipelines and supporting the delivery of reliable data solutions for reporting, analytics and wider business decision-making.
We're looking for someone with solid data engineering fundamentals who is comfortable getting into the detail, solving problems independently and working at pace. Strong SQL and practical experience building data pipelines are essential, this isn't a role suited to someone who has only had limited exposure to data engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain data pipelines and data integration processes
- Build and support ETL/ELT processes across a modern data environment
- Write, troubleshoot and optimise SQL queries
- Work with Python to support data engineering and automation activities
- Support the development and enhancement of cloud-based data solutions
- Contribute to data modelling, transformation and optimisation activities
- Monitor and improve data quality, reliability and performance
- Investigate and resolve data and pipeline issues
- Work with technical and non-technical stakeholders to understand requirements
- Contribute to data platform enhancements and continuous improvement initiatives
- Support reporting, analytics and wider data-driven projects
Required Experience
- 2-3 years' commercial experience working as a Data Engineer or in a similar hands-on data role
- Strong SQL skills with the ability to write queries confidently and troubleshoot data problems
- Practical experience using Python within a data engineering environment
- Proven experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT data pipelines
- Good understanding of data modelling, data warehousing and modern data engineering principles
- Experience working with cloud technologies such as Azure, AWS or GCP
- Comfortable working with structured and unstructured datasets
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, with a practical approach to resolving technical issues
- Ability to work independently and deliver at pace in a fast-moving environment
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and business stakeholders
Desirable Experience
- Experience with Databricks
- Experience with dbt
- Experience with Azure Data Factory, Airflow or other orchestration tools
- Exposure to Snowflake
- Experience with Git and modern development practices
- Understanding of CI/CD
- Familiarity with BI and reporting tools such as Power BI or Tableau
What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone who has moved beyond simply learning data engineering concepts and is comfortable applying them in a real production environment.
You'll need to be confident with the fundamentals, particularly SQL, pipelines and data transformation, and able to work through technical problems without needing significant hand-holding. The environment is fast-paced, so you'll need to be someone who can think logically, learn quickly and deliver practical solutions at pace.
