Company Overview
Gigawatt AI is building the AI-centric operating system for utilities. We harness AI at the enterprise level to better orchestrate customer delight, facilitate power optimization, improve the health of the grid, and unlock flexibility at scale. Gigawatt AI is a ground-up, AI-centric operating model that transforms how utilities run and how customers experience energy.
Speed is survival. What takes others quarters, even years, we deliver in cycles measured in weeks. No bloat, no distraction—just breakthroughs in code, data, LLMs, algos, purpose-built for utilities with industry-specific security and regulatory compliance at the core.
Job SummarySoftware Engineer(s) will play a foundational role in building the core platform that enables utilities to shift from decades-old legacy systems into an AI-native future. While the focus of this role is on backend engineering excellence, candidates must bring working proficiency with AI tools and APIs to ensure seamless integration of intelligent functionality into our products.
This role requires strong coding fundamentals, system design capability, and the mindset of a builder who thrives in a startup environment. You will work in small, agile teams reporting directly to the CTO, collaborating closely with AI engineers, security leaders, and product managers. Together, you will build and deliver AI-native services delivered at startup speed.
Key Responsibilities
- Backend Architecture & Development: Design, implement, and maintain APIs, services, and distributed systems that form the backbone of Gigawatt OS.
- AI Integration: Collaborate with AI engineers to integrate models, embeddings, and agent services into backend systems. Operate AI APIs, ensuring outputs are production-ready and aligned with enterprise utility requirements.
- System Modernization: Transform legacy workflows into modern, secure, scalable codebases using cloud-native best practices.
- Security & Compliance: Partner with security leaders to ensure all services adhere to stringent utility-sector regulations, implementing secure coding practices by default.
- Agile Delivery: Deliver features and improvements in cycles measured in weeks, balancing speed with reliability.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline.
- Experience: 5+ years of backend software engineering experience in SaaS or enterprise environments. Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality code in fast-moving teams.
Technical Skills:
- Strong proficiency in React, Python, and Golang or Java
- Basic proficiency with AI/ML tooling (e.g., calling APIs, integrating model outputs)
- Solid understanding of databases (SQL and NoSQL), message queues, and distributed architectures.
- Cloud-native engineering experience (AWS, Azure, GCP).
Soft Skills:
- Clear communicator, adaptable, eager to learn and grow AI capabilities over time. Strong sense of ownership and accountability in small teams.
Location
- Open to other locations but Chicago, Austin, Nashville are preferred.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary and equity package.
- Opportunity to shape security for a transformative AI product in a vital industry working with a rock-star team.
- Comprehensive benefits including health insurance, remote work flexibility, and 401k match.
- Collaborative culture focused on innovation and impact.
