Who We're on the Lookout For

Our team represents diverse food expertise in food technology, regulatory science and law, nutrition, commercial food safety, quality, toxicology, public policy, and communications.  

We are actively looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer (contract) to join our team of dynamic consultants in North America.

Summary of Responsibilities / Qualifications

Contractor shall be generally available at mutually agreed-upon times to provide senior-level full-stack engineering support, including but not limited to the following activities:

Full-Stack Development: Contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of web applications across both frontend and backend systems, with a primary focus on backend architecture and infrastructure.

Backend Engineering & Leadership: 

• Lead backend development efforts using Python and Django, establishing patterns, conventions, and best practices across the codebase. 
• Architect and maintain APIs, data models, and service layers that support scalability and long-term maintainability.
• Work with datastores such as PostgreSQL and Redis.
• LLM Integration & AI Systems: Design and implement LLM-powered features, including prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, and integration with third-party AI APIs.
• Evaluate and recommend tooling, frameworks, and architectural patterns for AI/ML workloads.
• Mentorship & Technical Leadership: Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pairing sessions, and architectural guidance.
• Drive engineering culture improvements around code quality, testing, and documentation.
• Help define and refine technical standards and development workflows.

Frontend Engineering: 

• Contribute to frontend development using React, TypeScript, and Next.js as needed. 
• Collaborate with frontend-focused engineers to ensure cohesive full-stack implementation.
• Collaboration & Communication: Participate in weekly team meetings and other collaborative sessions to identify, prioritize, and address technical challenges. 

DevOps & Deployment: 

Deploy and maintain applications using Docker and cloud platforms such as AWS, Fly.io, or DigitalOcean.

Quality & Best Practices:

• Ensure application security, performance, and reliability through the application of software engineering best practices. 
• Participate in and lead code reviews, maintaining high standards for documentation and code quality.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: 

• Work closely with designers, product managers, and other developers to deliver high-quality, user-centric solutions.

Other Duties: 

• Perform other engineering tasks as reasonably requested by the Company
