The Manager of Software Engineering will oversee a team of developers while remaining actively engaged in software design and development. This role is an even blend of 50% hands-on technical development and 50% people management/administrative leadership, requiring both strong coding expertise and proven leadership skills. The manager will guide architectural design decisions, approve timecards, collaborate with other engineering leaders, and ensure delivery of scalable, high-quality solutions.
Responsibilities:
- Lead, mentor, and support a collaborative team of software engineers while fostering a high-performance culture.
- Contribute directly to software development efforts (design, coding, code reviews, troubleshooting, and architecture).
- Provide leadership in solution architecture and design sessions, collaborating with other engineering leaders.
- Manage administrative responsibilities including timecard approvals, performance evaluations, and resource allocation.
- Promote Agile principles to improve visibility, predictability, and quality of deliverables.
- Collaborate with Product and Program Management on feature priorities, dependencies, and cross-team initiatives.
- Ensure the team follows best practices in SDLC (code reviews, testing, security, documentation).
- Partner cross-functionally with QA, IT, and Product teams to deliver on business goals.
- Oversee hiring, onboarding, training, and professional development of engineers.
- Report on delivery metrics to leadership, highlighting risks and opportunities.
- Encourage knowledge sharing, technical curiosity, and customer-centric thinking across the team.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
- 6+ years of software development experience, with at least 1+ year managing engineering teams.
- Hands-on experience with modern development stacks (e.g., Python, TypeScript/React, AWS services, REST APIs, and relational/NoSQL databases).
- Proven ability to balance hands-on coding with management responsibilities.
- Experience driving architectural design discussions and implementing scalable, performant solutions.
- Background in Agile development environments.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Working Conditions
- Primarily office/remote environment, with occasional travel as required.
