Transforming Memphis' Tech Workforce

Memphis residents are discovering new pathways to tech careers through Tech901, a nonprofit organization that's making technology education accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or previous experience.

Breaking Down Barriers to Entry

Inside classrooms at Crosstown Concourse, students from across the city are learning skills they never imagined pursuing. Tech901 provides industry-aligned training designed to quickly move students into high-demand tech positions, even for those without traditional degrees or prior experience.

"You don't always get that hand-to-hand connection," said Lawrence Dennis, a lead instructor at Tech901 and former student. "That feeling of having somebody who's been there and done that is able to help guide you. So we're a team of that."

Affordable Education Model

The organization's funding model makes tech education remarkably accessible. While the full program cost is $3,500, most students pay only $100 to $250 after government benefits or donor-supported scholarships. Tech901 is funded largely by Memphis-area foundations, allowing for significant tuition subsidies.

All course materials—including textbooks, quizzes, and homework—are included in tuition. The organization even provides laptops for in-class use at no additional cost, removing a common barrier for new learners.

Measurable Economic Impact

Executive Director Aaron Lamey calculates the organization's direct impact on the local economy: "We've impacted the local market by about $40 million based on people's jobs and income after the program."

Curriculum Tailored to Local Needs

Tech901 prepares students through courses including:

  • Tech Essentials
  • IT Foundations
  • Networking
  • Security
  • Database Fundamentals
  • Data Analytics
  • Code 1.0

The organization conducted extensive research to tailor its curriculum to the Memphis job market, focusing on skills that local employers need most from new hires.

Certification Pathways

Many classes fall under the nonprofit's IT Professional Track, which prepares students for industry-recognized certification exams. While passing these exams is encouraged, it's not required to complete the course—a structure designed to keep pressure low and access high for first-time tech students.

Inspiring Future Tech Professionals

"If somebody is never able to see what they could do, then it's really hard for their imagination to get kick-started," Dennis explained. "And that's what we really like to do here at Tech901. As I'm teaching the students, I'm not simply saying, 'Hey, these are the facts,' but also, they will pay you pretty good money to work in certain industries that are actually pretty fun."

Looking Ahead

Tech901 plans to launch a new slate of workshops in 2026, continuing its mission to expand access to tech education. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, making it easier for Memphis residents to begin their tech journey.
