The New Reality for Tech Graduates
Learning to code and working hard no longer guarantees the coveted tech jobs and six-figure salaries that were once promised to computer science graduates. A recent report highlights the struggles of new grads facing an industry transformed by AI tools and layoffs.
Ghosted by the Industry
Many graduates are applying for hundreds, if not thousands, of positions only to be ghosted or left feeling "gaslit" about their career prospects. Some are even resorting to jobs outside the tech industry, such as fast food, to make ends meet.
The AI Factor
With companies like Amazon and Microsoft embracing AI tools, the demand for traditional coding skills is declining. Magdalena Balazinska, director of UW’s Paul G. Allen School, stated, "Coding, or the translation of a precise design into software instructions, is dead. AI can do that." However, she emphasizes that design, teamwork, and problem-solving remain distinctly human skills.
The Hiring Process: Automated and Alienating
AI is not just changing the nature of tech jobs but also the hiring process itself. Companies are increasingly using AI to screen resumes, leading to instant rejections and a sense of alienation among candidates. One graduate reported receiving a rejection email just three minutes after applying.
A Glimmer of Hope
Despite the challenges, there are success stories. For instance, Amazon hired over 100 engineers from UW’s latest graduating class, showcasing a strong talent pipeline between universities and the tech industry.
The Bigger Picture
While AI is reshaping the job market, it’s not yet the main culprit behind hiring slowdowns. According to the Economic Innovation Group, workers in AI-vulnerable roles are actually less likely to be unemployed.
