Missouri's Tech Manufacturing Job Growth
A new report from the Missouri Chamber Foundation highlights that over the next five years, Missouri is expected to rank among the top 10 states for tech manufacturing job growth.
During a recent news conference at the state Capitol, lead researcher Ted Abernathy shared that the average annual salary for tech jobs in Missouri is approximately $146,000. Abernathy emphasized the tech sector's significant impact on the economy: "One job in the tech sector results in almost two other jobs throughout the economy."
Economic Impact of Tech in Missouri
Kara Corches, President and CEO of the State Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated that Missouri is strategically positioned to lead in tech manufacturing and other emerging technology sectors. She noted that tech accounts for 5% of Missouri’s total employment and 10% of the state’s gross product, with more than 14,000 net new jobs added in the last five years.
The report indicates that Missouri has seen the 4th highest number of jobs added by any industry in the state, ranking as the 7th fastest-growing state in tech manufacturing jobs.
Emerging Sectors and Innovations
Corches pointed out that sectors such as Ag tech, AI, cybersecurity, and Fintech have experienced significant job posting growth across the state. She emphasized that tech is not confined to urban areas; it's thriving in cities like Booheel and Hannibal.
Representative Dane Diehl highlighted the importance of technology in agriculture, stating, "Missouri is truly one of the biotech hubs of the whole United States." He noted that the technology sector is constantly evolving, pushing the boundaries of innovation.
The Role of Drones in Agriculture
Senator Kurtis Gregory discussed how drones are revolutionizing agriculture by providing actionable insights based on aerial imagery. He stressed the need for continuous innovation to meet future agricultural demands, stating, "By the year 2050, we need to double our agricultural output to feed the world."
Educational Growth in Tech Fields
David Pearce, Executive Director of Governmental Relations at the University of Central Missouri, praised the growth in Computer and Information Science programs. Enrollment in these programs has surged by 229% over the past five years, with forecasts suggesting that enrollment could reach 4,000 students by 2030.
Additionally, Missouri ranks among the lowest five states in business costs and housing burdens for workers, while also being 12th in women working in the tech industry and 9th in diversity within the tech workforce.
Recommendations for Future Growth
The report calls for immediate improvements in broadband infrastructure and cybersecurity to ensure reliable internet access and safeguard against digital threats. It emphasizes the importance of recruitment, particularly among young people, and encourages the formation of public-private partnerships in artificial intelligence, alongside outreach to underrepresented groups in tech.
