A comprehensive analysis of nearly 850,000 U.S. tech job postings reveals that cloud computing and infrastructure expertise are the most sought-after skills, overshadowing many of the buzzworthy technologies that dominate industry conversations. The study, conducted by web intelligence company Oxylabs, examined public tech job listings from January 2025 to March 2026, providing a data-driven look at the current hiring landscape.
The Cloud Dominance
Amazon Web Services (AWS) appears in 30% of all job postings, followed by Microsoft Azure (24%), Git (21%), and Microsoft Excel (15%). Google Cloud Platform and Kubernetes each appear in 14% of postings, with Docker at 13%, Power BI at 9%, Terraform at 8%, and Tableau at 7%. Notably, 42% of postings require experience with at least one major cloud platform, and AWS and Azure are frequently requested together, appearing in 15% of job descriptions.
Beyond the Hype
Cloud platforms account for a staggering 47% of all tool mentions in the dataset, with DevOps and developer tools at 30%, and business intelligence platforms at 18%. This highlights a significant gap between the skills that are trending on social media or at conferences and those that are actually in demand. As Andrius Kūkšta, Tech Lead at Oxylabs, notes, "Cloud, infrastructure, and data skills are in high demand. Where it gets more interesting is in the proportions: cloud platforms and DevOps tooling dominate job ads even more heavily than survey-based rankings suggest."
Hiring Surge Amidst Layoffs
Despite ongoing reports of layoffs, the first quarter of 2026 saw a 3.7x increase in hiring activity compared to the same period in 2025, accounting for 39% of all postings analyzed. Software engineering roles lead the pack at 38%, followed by data science and AI/ML roles (14%), technology and engineering management (14%), and DevOps and cloud roles (12%).
Regional Insights
California generates the largest share of tech job postings at 13%, followed by Texas (8%) and New York (5%). Virginia stands out with nearly three times the national average of tech jobs per capita, attributed to its concentration of data centers. Interestingly, while AWS dominates in most states, Azure leads in several Upper Midwest and Southern states like Minnesota, Indiana, and Tennessee.
Strategic Advice for Professionals
Kūkšta advises against chasing the latest trends without a solid foundation: "Chasing the most 'advanced' or talked-about tools without building cloud fundamentals first is a risky strategy. The data suggests professionals should first identify their target role category, then master the toolset specific to that path." This study underscores the importance of mastering core cloud and DevOps skills to remain competitive in the evolving tech job market.
