AI biz Anthropic is on a mission to uncover the real impact of its technology on the job market. With a staggering $61.5 billion valuation, the company is offering $10K–$50K grants to academics to study how AI could reshape employment.
The Economic Futures Program
Anthropic's latest initiative, the Economic Futures Program, aims to fund research into AI's effects on the labor market. "We’re launching this initiative to understand how AI is reshaping the way we work," the company stated. The program will also include conferences in Washington DC and Europe to discuss findings.
The Stakes Are High
CEO Dario Amodei has already warned that AI could lead to unemployment levels of up to 20%, potentially eliminating half of all white-collar entry-level jobs within five years. The company's Claude API credits will be part of the grants, allowing researchers to use its AI model for their studies.
Mixed Results from AI Experiments
Anthropic's own Project Vend experiment revealed some hiccups. The AI model, Claudius, struggled with basic tasks like pricing and inventory management, even giving away items for free. Despite these flaws, Anthropic believes AI could still augment or replace middle managers in the future.
What’s Next?
The first grants will be awarded in August, and the company is partnering with independent research institutions to validate future studies. "Society’s response to AI is not predetermined," Anthropic emphasized, highlighting the need for informed policymaking.
