As Amazon continues to streamline its operations, the company has announced further layoffs to kick off the year. According to The Seattle Times, Amazon has recently let go of employees from its corporate responsibility and communications division, including its sustainability team. However, the exact number of affected employees has not been disclosed.
In a recent move, Amazon also laid off 200 employees from its retail business, which operates its online marketplace. Earlier this month, it was revealed that 1,700 employees would be impacted due to the closure of seven warehouses in Quebec, Canada.
These layoffs are part of Amazon's ongoing effort to streamline decision-making and reduce management levels. Since becoming CEO in 2021, Andy Jassy has aimed to make the company more efficient. In fact, during the largest layoffs in 2022 and 2023, Amazon let go of at least 27,000 workers across various departments, continuing to make targeted cuts since then.
According to Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser, these recent employment losses will enable the company to respond more quickly and bring teams closer to customers. Jassy noted that there were too many managers, which was hindering productivity, leading to a request for teams to have fewer managers than regular staff.
In conjunction with these layoffs, Amazon has also ended its flexible remote work policy, now requiring employees to work from the office five days a week. The company has denied claims from some employees that these changes are intended to encourage resignations instead of layoffs.
For those who lost their jobs, Amazon is providing severance packages along with 60 days of pay and benefits. Some employees in the corporate responsibility and communications division are being offered relocation assistance as well.
