The AI boom is not just about software engineers and data scientists; it's also creating a surge in demand for electricians, installers, and maintenance workers to build and maintain the data centers that power artificial intelligence. According to new research from Indeed, these are among the fastest-growing tech jobs, with some positions paying $10 more per hour than similar roles outside the industry.
Data center job postings have more than doubled over the past two years, even as overall US job openings have fallen. Today, six out of every 1,000 US job postings are related to data centers, triple the share seen in 2023.
This hiring boom is not confined to Silicon Valley. Big tech companies are aggressively recruiting in places like Columbus, Ohio; Jackson, Mississippi; and Reno, Nevada, where their share of local job postings has surged.
About one-quarter of all data center openings are for installation and maintenance workers, who can earn a significant premium over comparable jobs in other industries. This trend highlights the growing importance of skilled trades in the tech sector and offers new career opportunities for workers without traditional four-year degrees.
As AI continues to expand, the demand for data center infrastructure will only grow, making these roles increasingly vital and well-compensated.
