Backend Engineer, Node.js/TypeScript

This role is part of a fast-scaling global engineering organization building the infrastructure for modern international work. You will contribute to the design and development of backend systems that power high-scale, mission-critical HR and payroll services used across 150+ countries. Working in a remote-first, cross-functional environment, you will collaborate closely with product managers, frontend engineers, designers, and QA teams to deliver reliable and scalable backend solutions. The position requires strong backend expertise combined with a product-oriented mindset, ensuring that technical decisions translate into meaningful customer impact. You will work on APIs, distributed systems, and high-volume data processing while ensuring performance, security, and scalability. This is a high-impact engineering role where your work directly supports millions of users worldwide. Accountabilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js and TypeScript
• Build and enhance robust APIs with a strong focus on performance, security, and scalability
• Develop backend features and services across the full software development lifecycle, from design to deployment
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including frontend engineers, product managers, designers, and QA to deliver end-to-end solutions
• Optimize database performance, including PostgreSQL queries, data modeling, and migrations
• Design systems capable of handling high transaction volumes, concurrency, and real-time processing requirements
• Ensure reliability and maintainability through clean architecture, testing, and code quality best practices
• Participate in product planning, technical discovery, and architecture discussions
• Identify and resolve production issues, contributing to continuous improvement and system stability

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience as a Software Engineer with strong backend development expertise
• Strong proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript/JavaScript
• Solid experience with SQL databases, particularly PostgreSQL, including optimization and data modeling
• Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and design patterns
• Experience building scalable, high-performance distributed systems
• Proven ability to design and maintain APIs, including authentication (JWT), validation, and secure architecture
• Experience handling high-throughput systems, concurrency, and performance optimization
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, and modern development practices
• Strong communication skills with ability to explain technical concepts clearly
• Experience working in remote, distributed, and asynchronous teams
• A product-oriented mindset focused on delivering customer value
