Senior Drupal 10+ Engineer

The mission

Aussie Angels is Australia's leading angel investing platform. We're building our platform using Drupal 10+ as a framework. The application is primarily for authenticated users - with content, dashboards, investor workflows, and AI-assisted features that help Fund Managers and LPs (Limited Partners) invest with confidence.

What you'll do

• Build polished, performant Drupal modules, themes and components.
• Design content models, permissions, and workflows in collaboration with Product and Design.
• Keep Drupal core and contrib up to date as security advisories are announced.
• Use Gitlab Milestones to schedule issues to be worked through for a release.
• Raise performance with cache metadata correctness, responsive images, and in future, add Varnish/CDN optimisations.
• Add tests (Cypress E2E, PHPUnit) and enforce coding standards (PHPCS, ESLint, Stylelint) in CI/CD.
• Document code and patterns in ways that help both humans and AI agents understand and extend our system.

Must-haves

• Combined 5-7+ years experience in hands-on software development.
• 3+ years building production Drupal sites (modules, themes, using Drupal best practices, solid understanding of Drupal's APIs, object oriented approaches).
• Experience implementing solutions with Claude Code (or similar AI dev).
• Knowledge of PHP 8.1+, Symfony 6, Composer 2 fundamentals.
• Site administration experience (editing Views, applying Configuration, changing field layouts).
• Database experience with MySQL/MariaDB at D10-supported versions.
• Testing and standards: PHPUnit and/or Cypress; PHPCS, ESLint, Stylelint.
• Security and privacy mindset aligned to Australian standards and regulatory obligations.

Nice to have

• Experience integrating AI-powered features into web apps (e.g. guided forms, smart validation, data extraction).
• Experience with decoupled or progressively decoupled Javascript architectures and front-end build pipelines.

How we work

• Small, senior tight-knit team.
• Daily standups and weekly planning (using GitLab Issues).
• Typically shipping weekly.
• Code reviews, enforced standards, and CI gates.
• We are leaning into AI - for both product features and engineering workflows - and you'll help define the patterns and guardrails that keep it safe, reliable, and valuable.
• We use Claude Code extensively to assist, but always with a developer in the loop and clear guidance. No vibe coding.
• We release frequently and regularly refactor extensively where it makes sense. With a small team, we therefore rely on automated tests heavily in CI and on-demand.

Where is the team based?

We're remote-first across Australia (concentrated on Eastern Time). Most of our team works flexibly from home and local coworking hubs, plus we occasionally meet in person for planning or social catch-ups. Your physical location within AU time zones won't limit your opportunities here.

Are you remote friendly?

Yes. We've been remote from day one. We work asynchronously, protect deep work time, and communicate clearly to stay aligned across locations and schedules.

What's the work culture like?

What's the tech stack?

Drupal 10+, PHP 8.1+, Symfony 6, MariaDB, Docker, Robo, Kamal for deploys, GitLab for issues and CI/CD, AWS (S3, EFS, EC2/Lightsail), PHPUnit & Cypress for E2E/Component testing, and Vue.js with custom and Syncfusion components for dashboards. We also use Claude Code and other AI-powered dev tools to move faster while maintaining quality and safety.

What's the hiring process like?

It's straightforward, respectful of your time, and designed to create mutual clarity.

1. Application review: we screen quickly against must-haves and aim to get back to you within a few days.
2. Intro call (15 min): a short alignment chat to confirm expectations, working style, and remuneration range.
3. Technical interview (45-60 min): a deeper session with our dev team covering architecture, problem-solving, and collaboration. May include a small optional code task (< 90 min).
4. Culture + offer alignment (45 min): a conversation with our leadership team about values, growth, and how we work.
5. References + decision: a couple (2-3) short reference calls before we finalise an offer.

We move fast (typically 2-3 weeks end to end) and communicate openly throughout.

Yes. Everyone who reaches later stages receives personal feedback, delivered respectfully and promptly.

Are you hiring interns or juniors?

Not really at this time. We're currently more focused on senior hires who can work independently within a complex Drupal and AI-integrated environment.
