Senior Web Designer & Developer (Impact Sites) - Volunteer
Job Description
Posted on: March 28, 2026
Build digital independence for 92 global projects. We need a senior Web Designer & Developer (3+ years) to architect scalable brand & website toolkits. Design & implement free-to-run platforms, giving local leaders the professional tools to drive sustainable growth. What difference will you make? Action Change is a unique charity dedicated to breaking the cycle of dependency. We don’t just run projects; we build long-term, financially sustainable initiatives in partnership with local communities. Our ultimate goal is to train, empower, and leave behind a robust project that no longer requires international rescue. This web building and design role is a critical component of that exit strategy. By providing our 92 projects with their own professional websites and brand identities, you are giving them the tools they need to achieve full digital and financial sovereignty. Currently, many of our most successful grassroots initiatives are hidden behind the Action Change brand. This role changes that. By helping individual projects showcase their work independently, you allow them to build their own reputation, attract their own corporate partners, and drive their own local donations. This visibility is the fuel for their financial independence. You are essentially providing the "digital infrastructure" that allows a community to move from being a recipient of aid to being a self-sustaining movement. Furthermore, your commitment to mentorship ensures this isn't a "one-off" technical fix. By training an "army" of local people to manage their own digital presence, you are ensuring that the impact of your work is permanent. You are gifting these communities a skill set that is globally valuable. This role directly supports our mission to empower local people to support their own communities. When a project can drive its own traffic and manage its own fundraising, Action Change has succeeded in its mission. Your senior-level skills are the catalyst that makes this transition from aid to independence a reality. What are we looking for? We are looking for an impact-driven "Digital Visionary"—a professional with at least 3 years of professional experience in brand design, web development, or UI/UX architecture. This role is for a "doer" who has mastered their craft and now wants to apply it to a mission of global empowerment. We need a volunteer who has the strategic maturity to advise on high-level digital architecture and the creative grit to roll up their sleeves and deliver assets. As this is an unpaid, UK-based role with a commitment of under 15 hours per week, it is ideally suited for a senior freelancer or professional looking to create a lasting legacy. The most important quality you bring is "Resourceful Innovation." Because our grassroots projects operate with zero digital budget, you must be an expert at leveraging free-to-use platforms like Raisley, WordPress, or similar tools to create "Big and Wow" results on a $0 balance. You should have a proven track record of building high-converting websites and professional brand identities. You are someone who can look at a technical challenge and find a clever, scalable solution that a local community leader can actually maintain. Experience in UI/UX design and front-end development is essential. You must be a "Scalable Thinker." We don't just need a website for one project; we need a system that can eventually empower 92 projects. We are looking for someone who can design templates and toolkits that are robust enough to work anywhere in the world but simple enough to be managed by someone with limited technical experience. You take pride in creating "user-proof" systems that prioritize the end-user (the local community lead) as much as the end-viewer (the donor). Your portfolio should demonstrate your ability to create professional, clean, and inspiring digital experiences. Finally, you must be a Natural Mentor. Action Change is an army of local change-makers, and your job is to equip that army. You must have the patience and the communication skills to translate complex digital concepts into simple, actionable steps for our local partners. You are a teacher at heart, energized by the idea of transferring your high-level expertise to someone who will use it to save their own community. If you are a senior lead who is tired of building brands for corporate profit and wants to build digital foundations for global freedom, this is your mission. You will have total creative autonomy to design a legacy of digital independence for projects in urgent need around the world. What will you be doing? As our Senior Web Designer & Developer, you will be the technical architect behind a revolutionary "Digital Independence" toolkit for our 92 global projects. This role is strictly for a senior professional with at least 3 years of experience who wants to apply their craft to a mission of global empowerment. Currently, our grassroots partners do incredible work but lack the professional digital presence needed to stand independently. Your mission is to bridge this gap by designing and building high-impact, low-cost digital assets that allow these communities to showcase their impact and drive their own sustainable revenue. This is a remote, UK-based, unpaid position requiring a commitment of less than 15 hours per week. It is a "Player-Coach" role—we need your senior-level strategic advice to choose the right platforms, but we also need your hands-on talent to deliver the work. You will not be required to line manage any paid employees; instead, you will focus on high-level creative output and strategic mentorship. Phase 1 Technical Stack & Infrastructure Strategy Working within a small expert squad, you will define a scalable web strategy that can be replicated across diverse global projects. Since these projects have no dedicated digital budgets, you will research and recommend the most robust free or low-cost platforms (such as Raisley, Wix, or other developer-recommended tools) that provide professional functionality without recurring costs. You will determine how to balance a "global" standard of UI/UX quality with the unique local identities of projects in Africa, India, and beyond. Phase 2 The "Digital-in-a-Box" Build You will lead the hands-on creation of website templates and brand identity kits. This isn't about building 92 unique websites from scratch; it’s about designing a clever, flexible framework that can be easily customized for a wildlife project in South Africa or a school in India. You will be responsible for the UI/UX, the technical setup of donation funnels, and ensuring these platforms are optimized to drive traffic and local fundraising. Phase 3 Implementation & Mentorship In keeping with Action Change’s core philosophy, the final stage is empowerment. You will create simple, accessible training guides and provide direct mentorship to local community members. You are not just building a site for them; you are teaching them how to maintain it. Your success is measured by the moment a local leader takes full control of their own digital presence, moving away from international aid and toward a future of self-sufficient storytelling and fundraising.
